Creamy Matcha Chai Latte

Millie Pham

If you love spiced chai and earthy matcha, why not mix them together? This Creamy Matcha Chai Latte is smooth, cozy, and packed with warming spices, plus that deep green tea flavor that makes every sip feel extra special. It’s creamy, comforting, and lightly sweetened—perfect for slow mornings or a midday pick-me-up. And the best part?

It’s super easy to make at home!

Let’s do this!

What You’ll Need

For the Chai Base:

  • 1 cup milk (or almond/oat milk for dairy-free)
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 chai tea bag (or 1 tsp loose-leaf chai tea)
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • ¼ tsp cardamom
  • 1 tsp honey or maple syrup (optional, for sweetness)
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

For the Matcha:

  • 1 tsp matcha powder
  • ¼ cup hot water (not boiling!)

Pro Tips

  1. Don’t boil the matcha! Use warm (not boiling) water to keep it from turning bitter.
  2. Steep the chai tea long enough. Letting it sit for 5–7 minutes gives it a rich, spiced flavor.
  3. Whisk the matcha well! A bamboo whisk or a handheld frother works best for a smooth, lump-free drink.
  4. Adjust sweetness. Add honey, maple syrup, or vanilla to taste.
  5. Make it extra creamy! Use frothed milk on top for a café-style finish.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Small saucepan
  • Whisk (matcha whisk or electric frother)
  • Strainer (if using loose-leaf chai)
  • Mug for serving

Substitutions & Variations

  • Dairy-free option: Use oat milk, almond milk, or coconut milk.
  • Extra spiced: Add a pinch of nutmeg or cloves for a bolder chai flavor.
  • Iced version: Chill the chai and matcha, then pour over ice.
  • Sweeter version: Stir in a drizzle of caramel or brown sugar syrup.
