Matcha Sugar Toast

Millie Pham

This Matcha Sugar Toast is a super easy treat that’s crispy, buttery, and has just the right amount of earthy matcha flavor.

It’s basically toast, but better—sweet, a little fancy, and perfect for breakfast or a snack.

The matcha gives it a gorgeous green color, and when it melts into the butter and sugar?

Pure magic. If you love matcha or just want to try something new, this is for you!

What You’ll Need

Ingredients

  • 2 slices of thick-cut bread (like brioche or milk bread)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp matcha powder

Tools

  • Butter knife or spatula
  • Small bowl
  • Spoon
  • Toaster or oven
  • Sifter (optional, for dusting extra matcha)

Pro Tips

Use soft butter – Cold butter won’t spread well, and you’ll end up tearing the bread.
Go for good matcha – Use ceremonial grade for a sweeter, smoother taste, or culinary grade if you like a stronger flavor.
Adjust sweetness – Add more or less sugar based on how sweet you like it!
Crispy or soft? – Toast it lightly for a softer bite or longer for extra crunch.
Dust with extra matcha – If you love matcha, sift a little extra on top after toasting!

How to Make Matcha Sugar Toast

1️⃣ Mix the Butter, Sugar & Matcha

In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, sugar, and matcha powder until smooth and creamy.

2️⃣ Spread the Matcha Butter on Bread

Evenly spread the matcha butter mixture onto both slices of bread. Make sure to cover the edges for the best flavor!

3️⃣ Toast It

Place the bread in a toaster or oven and toast until the edges are crispy and the butter melts into the bread, about 3-5 minutes.

4️⃣ Serve & Enjoy!

Take the toast out and let it cool slightly. Dust with extra matcha if you like. Slice and enjoy!

Substitutions & Variations

Different Sweeteners – Swap sugar for honey or maple syrup for a different flavor.
Dairy-Free – Use vegan butter or coconut oil instead of butter.
Extra Toppings – Try drizzling condensed milk or adding crushed nuts for crunch.
Matcha Cream Toast – Mix matcha with cream cheese instead of butter for a richer taste!

Leftovers & Storage

Honestly, this toast is best fresh! But if you need to store it:

  • Let it cool completely, then keep it in an airtight container at room temp for a few hours.
  • Reheat in a toaster or oven for a few minutes to crisp it up again.
