Let’s Make a Frozen Espresso Tonic!

Millie Pham

Cool, fizzy, and perfect for hot afternoons.

This is one of my favorite super-quick drinks when I want something cold, caffeinated, and a little fancy.

It tastes like something you’d get at a trendy coffee shop—but you can blend it up in 2 minutes flat.

It’s fizzy from the tonic, bold from the espresso, and icy-cold from the ice. Just three ingredients and a blender, and you’re there.

Kids won’t love this one (hello, caffeine!), but it’s perfect for a tired parent treat.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 shot (1 oz) espresso, cooled
  • ½ cup tonic water, chilled
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • Optional: orange slice or lemon zest for garnish

Why I Love This Recipe

Let’s Make a Frozen Espresso Tonic!

I discovered this drink last summer when I had espresso left over and didn’t want a hot drink. One quick blend later—boom! I was hooked. It’s now my go-to for:

  • Afternoons when I’m dragging but don’t want hot coffee
  • A fun drink to make when friends come over—it’s a great conversation starter
  • A refreshing twist on plain iced coffee

Pro Tips

  • Cool your espresso first so it doesn’t melt the ice too fast.
  • Use good tonic water—the better the tonic, the better the fizz and flavor.
  • Blend just until slushy—don’t overdo it or it’ll be too watery.
  • Add a garnish like citrus to brighten it up (orange works best!).
  • Double the recipe if you’re serving a crowd (or just want more for yourself!).

Tools You’ll Need

  • Espresso machine or strong coffee maker
  • Blender
  • Measuring cup
  • Spoon
  • Glass for serving

Substitutions & Variations

  • No espresso machine? Use 2 oz of strong cold brew or instant espresso.
  • No tonic? Try sparkling water with a splash of lime.
  • Want it sweeter? Add ½ tsp of simple syrup before blending.
  • Want a mocktail twist? Use caffeine-free coffee and tonic.

Make Ahead Tips

  • Brew your espresso ahead and store in the fridge for up to 2 days.
  • Freeze espresso in ice cube trays for even quicker blending later.

FAQ

Can I use cold brew instead of espresso?
Yep! Use 2 oz of strong cold brew.

What’s the best tonic to use?
Go for one without too many added flavors. Fever-Tree or Q Tonic work great.

Does it taste bitter?
A little bit—but the fizz and coldness balance it out. You can always add a dash of sweetener.
